Krishna: Lover and Hero
Hero and God

As Krishna unfolds the doctrine of non-attachment that will allow Arjuna to act according to his duty in a world of painful consequences, Arjuna realizes that Krishna is far more than merely the friend and charioteer he has supposed him to be. He asks to see Krishna in his form as a god, and Krishna gives him the vision of himself as all the universe, in its many ways and parts, standing as one in the body of the god of gods.

Arjuna begs Krishna to tell him who he is in this terrible form. Krishna replies:

Vishnu in his Cosmic Form, Manifested for Arjuna

  I am time grown old,
Creating world destruction
Set in motion
To annihilate the worlds;
Even without you,
All these warriors
Arrayed in hostile ranks
Will cease to exist.

Therefore, arise
And win glory!
Conquer your foes
And fulfill your kingship!
They are already
Slain by me.
Be just my instrument
The archer at my side!
