“Kimono as Art”

November 16
12:00–4:00 p.m.
Free admission at all locations from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Join SDMA, the Timken Museum of Art, Mingei international Museum, and Japanese Friendship Garden, for a free family festival in conjunction with the special exhibition Kimono as Art: The Landscapes of Itchiku Kubota.

Enjoy art activities and performances based on the artistic and cultural traditions of Japan, as well as programs and performances by local community organizations. Explore Kimono as Art at both SDMA and the Timken with docent-led tours in English and Spanish, and view Japanese Folk Fashion, Kimono, Yukata and Firemen’s Coat at the Mingei.

Learn the art of wearing and folding kimono or watch a Japanese tea ceremony. The Mingei Museum will also host a bunraku puppet-inspired performance of the story The Crane Daughter by Mark Robertson and Rosemary Tyrrell, formerly of Icarus Puppet Company, and the Timken will present storyteller Steven Gregory and musician Reiko Obata who will bring Japanese folktales to life.

Other performances will include traditional Japanese drumming and fan dancing, origami (paper folding), kiragami (paper cutting), and brush painting activities. Finally help create a giant kimono for the closing event!
