The Great Mughals
Shah Jahan (King of the World), 1592-1666

Enjoyed and used the power of pomp and luxurious display; created the jewel-encrusted Peacock Throne and the Taj Mahal, a white marble monument to his beloved wife Mumtaz

  • Reigned 1627-1658, 5th in line of the Timurid succession
  • Directed numerous painting projects to glorify imperial life, including dynastic and allegorical portraits
  • Can be identified among the "Great Mughals" by his full beard

LOOK FOR:

  • Compositions as a reflection of social hierarchy, with the emperor at the top
  • Formality in gestures, arrangements, and subjects
  • Shift in portraiture away from psychological insight towards documentation
