The San Diego Museum of Art has important holdings in a number of specialized areas. These include collections of prints
by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and embroidered silk robes from China, to name a couple of examples.
Due to the fragility of some objects and limited gallery space, these special collections are not always on view at the
Museum. Instead, they are presented as part of periodic temporary exhibitions or as online exhibitions.
The Museum is currently featuring the following four online exhibitions:
American Art in Context
In the late 19th century, Europe exerted a significant influence on American artists. This was due, in part, to the large
numbers of Americans studying art in Europe, particularly in France and Germany. In addition, many Americans who traveled
to Europe purchased works of art that eventually entered American public collections.
This presentation allows the viewer to compare and contrast several pairs of European and American Paintings

The Dragon Robes of China's Last Dynasty
The Museum's collection of Asian art numbers over 4,000 objects and includes important examples from almost every major historical
period in China. Generous donations of art over the past decades have built certain concentrations of art objects within the
collection. Among these, the Museum's holdings in textiles and, more specifically, Dragon Robes from the Qing Dynasty
(1644-1911), is of particular note.
The Museum currently owns approximately 30 Dragon Robes, which were worn by members of the Qing Dynasty court. These exquisitely
made garments of embroidered silk are quite fragile and, consequently, are rarely on display in the galleries.
The present online exhibition features six robes from the collection, representing a cross-section of the various styles,
decorative motifs, and functions encountered in this group. This online tour also includes related accessories and historical
information to provide the context for these magnificent garments.

The Posters of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (The Baldwin M. Baldwin Collection)
In 1988, the Museum became the beneficiary of an important collection of works by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
The donation of two paintings, eight drawings, and 85 lithographs, which includes all the posters Toulouse-Lautrec made,
was the culmination of a longstanding relationship between the Museum and the Baldwin M. Baldwin Foundation.
During the summer of 2001, Toulouse-Lautrec's posters formed an integral part of an exhibition titled High Societies,
which examines three important moments in the history of graphic arts.
This online exhibition showcases all 31 posters Toulouse-Lautrec produced during his career. These works embody the
energy and lifestyle of Parisian cabaret culture at the turn-of-the-century.
