Director, Development and Membership

Classification: Exempt

Reports: Deputy Director of External Affairs

Job Summary: The Museum is currently engaged in a comprehensive strategic planning process. In support of this initiative, the development and membership team recently completed a 3-year plan to grow revenue and increase volunteer and constituent engagement. The Director of Development position is a new post that will facilitate smooth internal operations so that maximum effort can be placed on building external relations. The position will oversee the daily operations of the development and membership programs, including the supervision of full-time and temporary employees.

Qualifications:

  • Education: B.A. or equivalent in related field preferred.

  • Knowledge: A minimum of five years’ professional experience in development required, including a demonstrated track record in achieving goals. Past experience at a major cultural institution, preferably a non-profit is desirable.

  • Abilities: Ability to motivate and create enthusiasm while creating and working with cross-functional teams. A stable and mature individual with an excellent work ethic who can be a role model for other staff. Ability to work closely with the Deputy Director for External Affairs. Ability to be culturally sensitive and respect diversity.

  • Skills: Good organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Excellent managerial/supervisory skills and ability to be a team player. Expertise in Raiser’s Edge donor software and Microsoft Office. Excellent oral and written skills essential.

  • Other Requirements: An appreciation for the arts and enthusiasm for furthering the mission of the Museum. A valid California Driver’s License, insurance and be willing to use it on the job preferred.

Physical Demands:

  • Sitting for long period of time at a desk using a computer
  • Carrying and lifting up to 25 lbs
  • Walking short distances within Balboa Park and elsewhere
  • Some driving/traveling required

Work Environment:

  • Office space may be shared
  • Noise level is quiet
