Museum Educator/Art Educator

Title: School in the Park & Outreach Educator

Classification: Non-Exempt

Reports: Coordinator of Community Programs

Job Summary:

The Museum Educator for SITP and Outreach is an integral staff member of SDMA’s teaching and outreach team. The instructor works with a second museum educator and the Coordinator of Community Programs in teaching a variety of programs on art in schools, community centers and at SDMA to reach families, children and adults. Programs incorporate art history, studio art, and museum gallery experiences, connecting to both the permanent collections and special exhibitions at SDMA. The Educator must have the ability to work with under-served audiences or audiences new to SDMA and the ability to work with diverse audiences/multi-generational audiences where English is the second language. The goals of this position are to provide programs that are welcoming, around interest in art, and arouse creativity in children, teens, families and adults. Programs take place at the Museum Art School, at SDMA and off site.

Qualifications:

  • Education: B.A. or B.F.A. in Studio Art, Art Education, Museum Education, or Art History preferred. Five years experience in teaching art and art-making with three years in an art museum/ teaching in gallery.

  • Knowledge: Art History background preferred.

  • Abilities: Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment. Detail oriented, patient, and flexible. Ability to work in culturally sensitive ways and respect diversity. Bilingual in Spanish preferred.

  • Skills: Strong skills in communication, teaching, presentation, and writing. Effective organizational and administrative skills.

  • Other Requirements: A valid California Driver’s license, car with insurance and be willing to use it on the job. Must have a car and also be able to drive SDMA’s vehicle.

Physical Demands:

  • Some carrying and lifting up to 30 Pounds.
  • Traveling to other sites by car.
  • Daily walking from SDMA to MAS (Museum Art School), which include stairs and parking lots to/from community centers, etc.

Work Environment:

  • Office space is located in the basement of the House of Hospitality in Balboa Park.
  • Office space is shared with two to three other museum staff
  • Noise level ranges from quiet to moderately noisy
