Hughie Lee-Smith

Following studies at the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts, Smith was employed to paint Social Realist murals for the Works Progress Administration. In 1963 he became the second black member of the National Academy of Design. Major retrospectives of his work were held in 1988 and 1997. "Art News," April 1999.
