In the same year that de Gheyn and Goltzius collaborated on the series of 12 Soldiers and Officers (of which one example is exhibited here), Goltzius also published a related series of three prints. These are unsigned, but were probably likewise engraved by de Gheyn. The Soldiers and Officers series portrayed military characters, but the men in those prints have not been identified as portraits. In contrast, the figures in the Three Dutch Soldiers have been identified; in this case, the “soldier” is actually a portrait of Gillis van Breen, another artist active in Goltzius’s workshop. The print, like the others in this series, was perhaps made as a playful joke for the cognoscenti, the collectors and artists in Goltzius’s immediate circle.
