Vincenzo Catena, unlike most Renaissance artists, seems to have been a man of considerable wealth and education, a humanist who chose to become a painter at a time when painters aspired to count humanists among their friends. Like Titian and Giorgione, the great revolutionary artists of his time, Catena received his artistic training from Giovanni Bellini, the most important painter of the previous generation in Venice. Catena also later formed some association with Giorgione, with whom he may have shared a studio. Catena’s manner of painting remained fairly traditional, and this work lacks the characteristic painterly brushwork of the younger generation of Venetian artists. His compositions are, nonetheless, more modern in spirit. This scene of the infant Christ reaching for the walker offered by Saint Joseph compares to the intimate mood in the works of the new generation of painters.
