This portable altarpiece shows the Madonna and Child with Saints Lucy, Catherine, Anthony Abbot, and Bartholomew, along with the Crucifixion, at right, and the Annunciation, in the tops of the wings. It is one of a small group of panel paintings that have been recognized as the work of a single but anonymous artist traditionally called the “Master of the Christ Church Coronation,” a name assigned on the basis of a painting in the Christ Church Picture Gallery in Oxford, England. The slightly oversized head and facial features of the Virgin Mary are often found in his works and demonstrate the persistence of medieval painting traditions, in contrast to the naturalism that was the prevailing impulse of the new Renaissance art. Likewise, the artist’s works frequently include beautifully patterned draperies like those seen here, but there is little attempt to depict those patterns in convincing perspective.
