These images represent the allegory of the three kinds of
marriage: marriage for pleasure, marriage for wealth, and
marriage for pure love. Marriage for pleasure or wealth is a
marriage based on lust or greed and is destined for unhappiness
and continued vice. In contrast, a marriage based
on pure and chaste love is one of virtue and is blessed by
divine decree.
