Given the general tendency for Mannerist artists to undertake novel subject matter, it is perhaps not entirely surprising to find that Bloemaert and Saenredam took up the Old Testament narrative of the prophet Ahijah, an extremely rare—possibly even unprecedented—subject in Renaissance art. Their decision to explore the subject may have something to do with the development of new illustrated editions of the Bible. It could also be the beginning of a trend, better known in the work of Rembrandt and his generation, to depict stories from the Old Testament rather than subjects from the lives of the saints that were no longer acceptable to a Protestant clientele.
