Saenredam and Bloemaert addressed the story of the prophet Ahijah, taken from the biblical Book of Kings, in two prints. The print above depicts a scene in which Ahijah divides his cloak with a knife, cutting it into pieces and giving them to the young Jeroboam; the incident foretold Jeroboam’s future elevation as king of the ten tribes of Israel, an event that would divide Israel into Northern and Southern kingdoms. In this second print, however, Ahijah predicts disaster for the king: “those of your people who die in the city shall be eaten by dogs, and those who die in the field shall be eaten by birds.”
