Paper Traces
This lithograph is believed to be a portrait of Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera's partner in life and in art. In a traditional European pose of the boudoir nude with downcast eyes, a body is displayed for viewer consumption. Frida, as sitter, complicates the artist-model relationship of subject and object in that she herself was an active art maker. Here, Kahlo performs the role of mestiza (a person of mixed indigenous and European ancestry), with her double-stranded necklace and trademark Tehuantepec hairstyle pointing to the mutual indebtedness between urban and peasant classes. The intensely intimate nature of the subject contrasts with Rivera's public and socially oriented work.
