May S. Marcy Sculpture Court and Garden brochure, c. 1975
Zuniga's monumental female forms relate to an ancestral heritage and materialism based on earth, plysical needs, bread and a struggle for existence. A type of Mother Earth diety, they are people of the soil, proud and self-reliant. What they lack in plysical comfort and social status is more than compensated for in their recognizable self-assurance and aristocratic demenaor. The solid realism of Zuniga's works is a departure from the usual fragmentation and abstraction in much of the sculpture produced in contemporary times.
