Born in New York City, Morgan Russell studied at the Art Students League and the New York School of Art. After visiting Europe twice, he settled in Paris in 1909. Russell and artist Stanton Macdonald-Wright (1890–1973) were friends and founded an artistic movement, Synchromism, while living in Paris. The word “synchromy” means “with color.” Synchromism marked the first movement of abstraction founded by Americans. Both Russell and Macdonald-Wright pursued a bright and varied color palette and, in keeping with their movement, believed that variations in color hues implied shifts in volume. Here, the artist portrays a still life within a lunette, demonstrating his ability to render work that blends the representational with pure abstraction. Behind the traditional fruits and books associated with still-life representations, a partial sculpture of a man rests on a table.
