At first glance, the bright colors of this painting present an almost abstract pattern, but the true nature of the scene then reveals itself: as the moon rises, the blasted bodies of the dead are revealed across the torn landscape of a battlefield. Although Dix had entered the war as an enthusiastic volunteer, his images present it instead as the grim, horrible reality experienced by soldiers on the front line. The work is closely akin to Kollwitz’s After the Battle, and to Dix’s own Forest (both shown nearby), although the latter concentrates on the landscape itself, using the leafless trunks of blasted trees to show the aftermath of battle.
