The Jungle, 1963
Oil on Masonite
Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Norton. Walbridge, 1976.219

Influenced by Hector Hyppolite, Haiti’s greatest modernist painter and fellow native of the coastal city of St. Marc, Philippe-Auguste Salnave spent most of his career in the nation’s capital of Port-au-Prince as its leading legal scholar and judge. He found success as a painter, and exhibited his work at the national art center as well as at museums in the United States. His compositions often feature a radiant palette, animals, and aspects of Haitian Vodou, the syncretic religion that combines aspects of Roman Catholicism and West African Vodun. --MAB
