The story of Susanna, from the Book of Daniel, is about the triumph of virtue over deceit and lust. After she refuses their lecherous advances, the two elderly magistrates accuse Susanna of adultery. In a reversal of fortune, the eldersâ€™ treachery was revealed and Susanna was freed.
Trained in Valencia, Ribera set off for Italy around 1610. Following stays in Parma and Rome, â€œlo Spagnolettoâ€ â€“ as he was known â€“ settled permanently in the Spanish viceroyalty of Naples, where he became the leading painter of his generation.
