These are two from a series of six engravings that depict the story of Adam and Eve. The first shows the scene when the animals, having been created, are led by God before Adam, who names them; they then scatter into the world in the background. The second print shows the far more common scene of Adam and Eve underneath the tree of knowledge, with the creation of Eve in the background. Like much of Saenredam’s work, the prints are notable for their depiction of a range of textures and surfaces, in this case particularly in the various animals and the plants in the landscape.
