Rose went to Paris in 1888 and studied at the Académie Julian. In 1890, he traveled to the town of Giverny, made famous as the home of Claude Monet (1840–1926), who had arrived there in 1883, and spent much time in the burgeoning artists’ colony. The gentle gradations of green, blue, and purple hues in Late Afternoon, Giverny are typical of Rose’s work. The small houses seen in the distance are also typical of Giverny and Rose’s cottage. The sumptuous trees of the landscape populate both the foreground and the middle ground of the composition; the foreground trees are likely fig trees. Rose is remembered not only as a superbly talented painter and but also for encouraging artists to practice plein air painting after he returned to California. Several of his works were inspired by the views from La Jolla.
