Huang Shen is one of the famous Yangzhou baguai, or “Eight Eccentric Artists of Yangzhou,” a group of eminent artists during the 18th century. Here he honors the Jin dynasty (265–420) poet-official Tao Qian (365–427) by depicting Pengze county, where Tao refused to humble himself to a visiting inspector for a salary. Huang remained a humble commoner despite his artistic talents. Shunning official degrees, perhaps both Tao and Huang appreciated values in leading a modest life.
