Stella has famously said of his art that “what you see is what you see,” a statement so often repeated that it is both defining and limiting. Beyond what you see, Stella pioneered a distinctive form of abstraction that deftly weaves painting and sculpture and exhibits an architectural sensibility. He is one of the most significant living artists and the only living artist to have two retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Flin Flon VIII relates to the artist’s Protractor Series, as evidenced by the flurry of colorful angular shapes evocative of the small tool. The title of this painting comes from a small town located on the border of Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Canada. In this square canvas, Stella explores many of the ideas on the potential of form, color, and scale that he was experimenting with in his irregularly shaped canvases.
