A prominent sculptor at the height of his popularity at the beginning of the 19C, Canova was summoned by Princess Borghese, the sister of Napoleon, to portray her as the victorious and beautiful Venus. He had been trained in Venice and in Rome and knew well these antique inspirations for the neo-classicism of his time. His most famous work is a sensous yet classically aloof reclining figure of the Princess upon a couch, whose face and hair much resemble our work. The prisitine purity of the white marble heightens the effect of the beauty of the "Grecian" goddess.
