Marguerite Wildenhain was educated at the Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany, where she studied pottery with Max Krehan and sculpture with Gerhard Marcks. She taught at the academy in Halle-Saale and designed prototypes for Royal Berlin Porcelain from 1929 to 1933, when she opened a studio in Putten, Holland. She emigrated to the United States in 1940, and, in 1942, established a workshop in Guerneville, California, called Pond Farm.
Beginning in 1949, she conducted annual summer classes at Pond Farm where she stressed knowledge of form and material as the basis for making good pottery. Wildenhain also placed great emphasis on wheelwork, which she considered the most important part of the “creative moment.”
Her forms were often functional, as in this lidded cookie jar. The incised decoration features conventionalized vegetal forms; accented by subtle glazes that serve to enhance, rather than hide, the textured stoneware surface,
