Maruyama ?kyo was a very talented artist trained in the style of the Kan? School, which originated in the mid-fifteenth century and primarily followed Chinese painting style. ?kyo, as well as many other Japanese artists, particularly admired Chinese painting of the Yuan era (1269–1368). Like Kan? artists, ?kyo worked for commission from patrons, a common practice in Japan after the fifteenth century. However, in contrast to Kan? artists, ?kyo focused on a realistic depiction of objects, which made his work more attractive than his contemporaries’. He established a school that became known as the Maruyama School, where he educated several important painters, including Matsumura Goshun (1752–1811) who founded the Shijo School. Together, their followers constitute the Maruyama-Shijo School.
This painting was likely created by followers of the Maruyama-Shijo
School, because of the rendering of volume in the elephant’s body—this sense of three-dimensionality was a practice first introduced to Japanese art by ?kyo. The details and refinement in the hair and clothes of the Bodhisattva follow the fashion of the Kan? school.
