The carnation was a traditional symbol of betrothal or marriage in German art, and husbands and wives were often depicted in paired portraits, facing one another, with one or both of the sitters holding that flower. The woman in this painting is probably the wife of the scholar Petrus van Clapis, for the picture seems to be the companion to his portrait, which is now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest

The carnation was a traditional symbol of betrothal or marriage in German art, and husbands and wives were often shown in paired portraits, facing one another, with one or both of the sitters holding that flower. Both this work and the adjacent picture by Jörg Breu, which also shows a sitter with a carnation, were presumably paired with pendant portraits of the sitters’ spouses. The woman in this painting is probably the wife of the scholar Petrus van Clapis, for the picture seems to be the companion to his portrait, which is now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest. -- Art of the Portrait 2023
