Lovis Corinth studied with William-Adolphe Bouguereau at the Academie Julien in Paris in 1894 before going to Munich where he abandoned academic painting and joined the Munich Secession. By 1900 he moved to Berlin and eventually became president of the Berlin Secession group. He painted numerous self-portraits as a means of self- examination, often in the guise of a historic or legendary figure. In this painting, Corinth dons a monocle as Alexander Freiherr von Reitzenstein, an art historian at the University of Munich, who was also an expert in weapons.
