Giovanni Bonsi was part of a group of artists in Florence who continued in the later 14th century the monumental new style that Giotto had pioneered in years just after 1300. This is evident in the weighty corporality of Saint Nicholas, which might be contrasted with the still-stylized figures of the roughly contemporary painting by the Master of the Christ Church Coronation shown nearby. The solid form of the saint is combined, though, with the beautifully detailed punchwork that ornaments his elaborately patterned robe and the gold ground of the panel. Following the usual convention of Italian artists, Nicholas is shown dressed as a bishop, and he carries three golden balls, a reference to the gifts he made to provide a wedding dowry for the three daughters of a poor man.
The panel is the right wing of a triptych that was taken apart in the 19th century. The central section, depicting the Madonna and Child, is now in the Denver Art Museum, and the left wing, with Saint John the Baptist, is in a private collection.
